Tall back chair with an ebony finish. I have some ebony in my shop but I use it just for fine inlay work. Ebony has become very rare and extremely expensive. A small piece of wood measuring 12" x 12" and one inch thick costs $50 or more, far too expensive for furniture making.
It is possible to achieve a beautiful ebony-like finish using madrone wood. Madrone is a beautiful wood in its own right and is very densely fibered. It becomes as smooth as ivory to the touch. When it is colored black and finished with a crystal clear lacquer, it is gorgeous
